The Clark Flyer

Posted by: Joe on: September 7, 2013

We recently visited the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. While there, we saw the original Wright Flyer. As soon as we returned home, Clark decided to make a model from memory using whatever he could scrape together around the house. I was pretty impressed. Here’s another angle.     There were several highlights from our recent trip but there’s one small moment that was especially meaningful. Standing on the porch at George Washington’s home, Mount Vernon, overlooking the beautiful Potomac River we saw a large Bald Eagle soaring along the river. I watched this ceremony as a child, but it was very cool to see it again. I had forgotten the hike from the Visitor’s Center up the hill to the Tomb.

Today’s travels started early since our travel planner had a packed schedule for us to enjoy.   We traveled to the National Museum of the Marine Corps where we enjoyed meeting Frank (see pictures of the Iwo Jima section). After a few hours of sleep in Kingsport, TN, we were up early to drive to Appomattox Court House National Historic Site. This seems an appropriate place to conclude our study of the Civil War.
